Dr. Yingfei Ma's research focus is on the virome and synthetic biology of phage. Phage is the most abundant and diverse group of biological entities on the planet. The vast majority of the phage in nature are uncultured. Due to the progress in sequencing technology, the newest culture-independent way of assessing phage diversity and abundance is using viral metagenomics. The Ma lab is developing new bioinformatics tools using cutting-edge techniques, such as machine learning, deep learning, etc., to identify phage sequences from the complex microbial metagenomics sequencing data. The identification of new phage sequences will help us understand the role of phage in a give ecosystem. Meanwhile, For more than a century, phage research has enabled some of the most important discoveries in biological sciences. Phages have also been recognized and exploited as natural antimicrobial agents. Recent progress in DNA manipulation and synthetic biology allowed scientists to engineer phage genomes. This may have the potential to accelerate the construction of designing phage genomes with superior therapeutic potential.
