From December 15 to 17, 2023, the Seminar on Mathematical Perspective of Quantitative Synthetic Biology Efforts I (Knowledge & Practice Workshop) was hosted by Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology in Guangming district of Shenzhen. More than 50 experts and scholars, and more than 100 rising stars gathered with their knowledge and practice to focus on cutting-edge achievements of synthetic biology and embrace a bright future.
The seminar was presided over by researcher Liu Chenli, vice president of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology and president of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology and professor Zhu Jingde, the advocate of the Knowledge & Practice Initiative. In the event, the attendees had a dialogue based on their knowledge and practice around three topics, namely “high quality quantitative synthetic biology system and its multidimensional, accurate data acquisition”, “high quality quantitative synthetic biology system and the excellent platform technology for multidimensional accurate data acquisition” and “the mathematical interpretation of the behavior and underlying mechanism of high quality quantitative synthetic biology system: data requirements and algorithm development”.

16 experts in the fields of life science and mathematics from the University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology and other domestic first-class universities and research institutes in China shared their academic concepts, research achievements and reflections on how to develop their research systems from the perspective of synthetic biology.
In the discussion at the end of the event, the experts had an in-depth discussion on how to integrate knowledge and practice and establish a mathematical interpretation system for a high-quality synthetic biology system with rich data, providing more ideas for the development of quantitative synthetic biology.
After the exciting and intense discussion, all the attendees visited the major scientific and technological infrastructure of synthetic biology research (hereinafter referred to as the infrastructure) and Shenzhen Engineering Biology Industry Innovation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Innovation Center).
The infrastructure has thus far completed the microbial functional islands and mammalian cell culture screening island. With the help of intelligent, automated and high-throughput equipment, the infrastructure was equivalent to an intelligent “biological factory”, which can finish a close-loop research of “design, building, testing and learning” efficiently with a low cost and multiple cycles. It has achieved the rational design and synthesis of artificial lives, completed an advanced design and manufacturing platform for intelligent life system and provided an innovative research platform for the global synthetic biology research, industry and big science program.
The Innovation Center aimed at the national major strategic needs and the national economy, and followed the “foresighted deployment in major innovation platforms and incubators” at the Guangming Science City in accelerating the all-round development of Shenzhen in synthetic biology fundamental research, platform construction and application to create an open, sharing, foresighted and interdisciplinary innovation platform and a comprehensive innovation ecosystem with cooperation of various subjects, linkage of various elements and collaboration of various fields. In this way, it has promoted the construction of Guangming Science City into a national highland for synthetic biology industry, boosted the construction of Shenzhen into a comprehensive national scientific center and contributed strength to the construction of Shenzhen as a pioneering zone of socialism and Guangming Science City.
