Yin Yu(于寅), M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Dr. Yu is an Associate Professor of Institute of Synthetic Biology in Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the director of Tissue and Organ Engineering Laboratory.
Prof. Yu received his MD degree in Clinical Medicine from Nantong University, College of Medicine, where he completed medical school and finished his clinical training. He obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa, where he described the mechanism of articular cartilage regeneration after joint injury and the activation pathway for chondrogenic progenitor cells; he also synthesized "smart" biomaterials for articular cartilage regeneration and developed 3D Bioprinting system for biofabrication of musculoskeletal tissue, vascular tissue, and miniature organ system. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Center for Engineering in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, under the mentorship of Prof. Martin Yarmush, where he worked on engineered MSCs and synthetic gene-activated matrix for orthopaedic applications, with a focus on osteoarthritis treatment and join regeneration. His current research interest is primarily in the area of Cellular Engineering, Synthetic Biomaterials, Biofabrication, Regenerative Medicine, and Orthopaedic Bioengineering. His research has led to three spin-out companies. Prof. Yu is also the recipient of multiple prestige international award including: Young Investigator Award from Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI), Magna Cum Laude from International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS). He is also the standing committee for ICRS NextGen.
