Hosted by the Korean Synthetic Biology Association (KSBA), the 2025 Asian Synthetic Biology Association (ASBA) Annual Conference Korea — themed “Driving Innovation in Synthetic Biology for a Sustainable Future” — wrapped up in triumphant success at Jeju Parnas Hotel, Republic of Korea, from December 7 to 11, 2025! As the flagship international academic gathering for Asia’s synthetic biology pioneers, this landmark event united top-tier and rising stars from Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and beyond, igniting a vibrant hub for sharing breakthrough research and game-changing technological advances.

Distinguished Guests & Core Visionaries The conference was steered by a constellation of academic luminaries who led the charge for regional progress. Professor Byung-Kwan CHO of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) — a cornerstone of the ASBA International and Local Organizing Committees — spearheaded every detail of planning and execution, earning the prestigious Synthetic Biology International Network Achievement Award for his extraordinary contributions to cross-border collaboration. He joined alongside six brilliant members of his KAIST lab, bringing cutting-edge insights to the forefront.

Joining this powerhouse lineup were visionary leaders shaping the future of synthetic biology:

- Professor Chenli LIU: Vice Director of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), CAS, and a global authority in synthetic cell research, whose work redefines the boundaries of life sciences

- Professor Matthew Wook CHANG: A trailblazer in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology applications from the National University of Singapore (NUS), driving real-world solutions for global challenges

- Professor Akihiko KONDO: A legendary expert in microbial synthetic biology and sustainable biomanufacturing from Kobe University, Japan, leading the charge for eco-friendly industrial innovation

Attendees spanned the full spectrum of synthetic biology — from foundational lab breakthroughs to industrial-scale applications — united by a shared passion for interdisciplinary, cross-border collaboration that transcends borders and disciplines.

Five Days of Groundbreaking Exchange

Over five electrifying days, the conference buzzed with energy as participants engaged in inspiring keynotes, dynamic round-table discussions, and eye-opening poster sessions. Together, they brainstormed bold solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges: climate change, resource scarcity, public health crises, and more — proving that synthetic biology holds the key to a sustainable future.
