Dr. Xiang Gao is a Principal Investigator at the SIAT, CAS. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). His research focuses on semiconductor–biohybrid artificial photosynthesis, integrating biocatalysis with photo- and electrochemical catalysis to construct artificial photosynthetic cells that transcend natural systems. These biohybrid platforms establish new routes for light- and/or electricity-driven conversion of waste carbon resources—including CO₂, plastics, and organic waste streams—into value-added chemicals, offering innovative strategies to address global challenges in food security, sustainable energy, and environmental stewardship.
