Dr. Hui Mei received his Bachelor degree in pharmacy from Peking University in 2006, Master degree in chemical biology from Peking University in 2008, and PhD in chemistry from Osnabrück University in 2015. He was a post-doctoral fellow in the Stanford University before joining SIAT. His work has been published in J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nucleic Acids Res., ChemComm, Biomacromolecules and other top international academic journals.

The Mei lab will study the possibility of replacing natural genetic material DNA with xenobiotic nucleic acids (XNAs) in synthetic biology, and further using this knowledge to build an artificial xeno-life. Another direction will focus on developing novel chemical tools or methods to solve biological problems at the molecular level. Potentially, these efforts will develop novel technologies to probe natural biology, seed new medicines and diagnostics to improve human health, and create novel synthetic life forms to serve human needs.
