Prof. Chenli Liu is a Pengcheng Distinguished Professor in Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Vice President of SIAT, the Founding Director of National Industrial Innovation Center for Biomanufacturing (NIICB), the Founding Director of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology (iSynBio), the Founding Director of CAS Key Laboratory for Quantitative Engineering Biology, the Chief Scientist of Shenzhen Infrastructure for Synthetic Biology (infraSynBio). 

Liu also serves as the Executive Editor-in-Chief of Synthetic Biology Journal (Chinese), Associate Editor of Engineering Biology, and mLife, and as Editorial Advisory Board member of the journals ACS Synthetic Biology, Systems and Synthetic Biotechnology, Quantitative Biology, Journal of Genetics and Genomics. 

Liu obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Hong Kong, and postdoctoral training in MCB, Harvard University. Liu started his own lab at SIAT in 2014. Over the years, his group made major contributions in elucidating the evolutionarily stable strategy to colonize spatially extended habitats and the interconnections between bacterial cell growth, DNA replication, and cell division. 

For his distinguished work, he received several prestigious awards, e.g. "Agilent Thought Leader Award", “C.C. Tan Life Science Innovation Award”, "Young Scientists Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences", "Excellent Mentor Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences", "VCANBIO Award for Biosciences and Medicine", "Li Ka Shing Award", "Hong Kong Young Scientist Award", etc.

The research area of his lab includes Synthetic Quantitative Microbiology, SynBio Tumor Therapy, Synthetic Pattern Formation, Directed Evolution System. Recently, the Liu lab expanded their interests to Synthetic Cell Studies, striving to construct a synthetic cell using defined biological macromolecules through bottom-up methodologies.


刘陈立,研究员(二级),博士生导师,2002年本科毕业于厦门大学生物系,2011年获香港大学李嘉诚医学院博士学位,之后在美国哈佛大学分子与细胞生物学系做博士后,2014年回国工作。现任中国科学院深圳先进技术研究院副院长,定量合成生物学重点实验室(中国科学院)主任,国家生物制造产业创新中心主任,深圳合成生物学创新研究院创始院长,深圳合成生物研究重大科技基础设施首席科学家。

主要从事合成生物学研究,聚焦复杂生物系统形成过程的基本原理,合成生物系统的理性设计原理等重要科学问题开展工作。特别是探索单细胞生命从头合成的设计原理,以及实体瘤的合成细菌治疗。先后主持“国家杰出青年基金”“基金委重点项目”“国家重点研发计划””中国科学院战略科技先导专项”等科技任务。

目前担任国家自然科学基金委员会生命科学部专家咨询委员会委员,中国科学院学术委员会“基础前沿交叉”专门委员会委员,中国生物工程学会常务理事,合成生物学分会副会长兼秘书长,亚洲合成生物学协会ASBA联席主席,Charles Helmstetter Prize奖励委员会主席,美国微生物学会ASM国家代表,深圳市政协委员(科技界别召集人),深圳市高等教育专家咨询委员会委员,《合成生物学》执行主编,《Engineering Biology》《mLife》副主编。

曾获“谈家桢生命科学创新奖”“安捷伦思想领袖奖”“中国科学院青年科学家奖”“中国科学院优秀导师奖”“中源协和生命医学奖创新突破奖”“香港青年科学家奖”“李嘉诚奖”等奖项。
